A Visit to Rhyl Library

North Wales has made a commendably strong investment in its libraries in recent years.

For instance, the one in Rhyl, which was already pretty good, has been refurbished over the last few months,

and today I went there to give a talk to a reading group composed mainly of the Townswomen's Guild (some of whom are shown here, together with one of the librarians at Rhyl, Kathryn Parry)

and also a member of the local fire brigade. It was a lively session, and I was asked several questions during and after my talk, so I enjoyed myself tremendously. And after the talk they gave me a pretty potted cyclamen which now has pride of place on my window sill.

Thank you Rhyl!

Rhyl library sounds fantastic. I see (from the photo) that it has a cafe, which hopefully serves as an additional incentive for people to visit. (I am posting this from a library in the US that is now offering cups of tea to readers -- for something like 60 p per cup -- a great feature that helps bring in money for the library.) Anything that draws people to libraries is a great thing, as long as it encourages them to read books once they are there.

On a different note, just to let you and your readers know that I have started a new blog called "Cosmic Quest" about contemporary cosmology. (Sorry that I cannot offer cups of tea with each post, at least at present.) Here is a link:

Hi Paul, I didn't notice the cafe! I should have gone in for a coffee. Yes, you're right - they're great to draw in people.

I'm linking to your blog. Best of luck with it.

I work in the library once a week in the advocacy office . I find the Art gallery section very interesting with some excellent digital photography and other media displays . The History section on the first floor is a little bit limited and in need of a wider perspective rather than a slavish dedication to tourists shots and the tourist industry . Remember rhyl did have an industrial history as well.I would also like the Library to be able to exhibit the Iron age tools found at splash point which are now locked away in draws in Aberystwyth university

Thanks for the tip, Anon! I shall take a look at the Art Gallery next time I'm there if I have the chance.

Sounds like you've got some good ideas for displays.
